Why were turkeys named after Turkey?

Have you ever wondered why turkeys (the birds) were named after an Asian country (Turkey?). Turkeys were originally American birds. When Europeans "discovered" America merchants soon started selling these new birds to England and other countries. Turkish merchants sold the new big birds to the British. Back then (in the XVIII century) the British called anything that the asian merchants sold them "Turkey". So they had turkey bags and turkey rugs (even though they were Persian). The bird was named "Turkey chicken" and later, just Turkey.
